How chiropractic restores balance in the body

Chiropractic care helps restore health by creating balance in the body. What exactly does this mean?

Chiropractic works with your nervous system

Because chiropractic care focuses on the functioning of the nervous system, it has the ability to influence the body as a whole. The nervous system coordinates everything in the body, from playing basketball, to regulating hormones, to moving food through our intestines. The brain uses the spinal cord and nerves to communicate information to different parts of the body. Misalignments in the spine can interfere with this communication, impairing the brain's ability to coordinate balance in the body's functions. Chiropractic care focuses on removing this interference to restore the communication between the brain and the body.

What do we mean by "balance?"

If you remember the term "homeostasis" from high school biology class, it means the active, dynamic process of balancing body chemistry to maintain equilibrium. The body works to maintain homeostasis as it responds to various stressors from our environment. Chiropractic helps the body achieve homeostasis by removing interference from the nervous system's coordination of the body's functions.

What this means in practice is that chiropractic doesn't have just one effect! For example, in a patient who has high blood pressure, adding chiropractic care may lead to a decrease in their blood pressure. In other patients who have low blood pressure leading to symptoms such as dizziness and fainting, adding chiropractic care may lead to an increase in blood pressure. Either effect can be a result of chiropractic care because chiropractic care helps the patient's body coordinate homeostasis more effectively. This is just one of many examples of how chiropractic can help regulate the body's functions!
